Working as a lecturer
Working as a lecturer

Welcome new lecturers

Thank you for joining us as a lecturer. Together with approximately 1,200 fellow lecturers, you will soon be working on the development of our students into professionals. You will encourage and stimulate them to develop their knowledge, be curious and inquisitive, work with other students and gain practical experience in the professional field.

As a teacher, you therefore have an important role to play, agrees Luc Verburgh, former president of the Executive Board* [video in Dutch].

* Luc Verburgh was chairman of the Executive Board until June 1, 2023.

What we expect from you

As a lecturer, we expect you to contribute to the successful development of students into well-educated professionals who are relevant to our region. Most lecturers at Zuyd start out as subject matter experts with extensive knowledge and practical experience. However, the profession of lecturer is often new. And yet we expect our lecturers to be able to:

  • teaching students;
  • supervise students;
  • design education;
  • test and assess;
  • demonstrate professionalism in teaching.

Your development as a lecturer

We would like to support you in your development as a lecturer so that you too can acquire the five competencies mentioned above. That is why we expect you to participate in the Basic Teaching Skills qualification, in Dutch the Basis Didactische Bekwaamheid or short BDB). This course consists of a starter module, a follow-up module and the Basic Examination Qualification (BEQ). The BDB consists of interactive meetings in which we inspire, guide and support you in your learning process as a lecturer.

Curious about what you can expect as a new lecturer and how we use the BDB to guide you in your new role? Check out the story of course leader Henk Acampo, and of fellow lecturers Laura, Robbin and Isabelle below [video in Dutch].

docente met student

It is important to us that you quickly feel at home at Zuyd. That is why, as a new lecturer, you will also have a mentor who can guide you in terms of content, answer your questions and give you feedback. And remember: you are not the only one - without experience - to start working as a tutor at Zuyd.

Our vision on education

As a lecturer, you contribute to the development of students into professionals. In our vision on education we optimally contribute to student development through education that:

  • is an activating and modern-day approach to the use of technology; (video)
  • is up-to-date with regard to content through the integration of research; (video)
  • encompasses a practical approach with and for the professional field; (video)
  • is inclusive in engagement; (video)
  • has a high degree of flexibility in order to meet needs. (video)

In five short videos, we explain what we mean by these elements of our educational vision. There is also a video about the total educational vision. As a lecturer, you play an important role in developing and delivering education that fits this vision. Watch the videos before you start working at Zuyd, so that you can immediately contribute to realizing our vision with your fresh view and experiences.

Education systems

As a lecturer, you will work with various education systems. Moodle is Zuyd's electronic learning environment. This is the environment for students in which you can post notifications about your subjects, share learning resources, give assignments and so forth. You will also work with Osiris Docent, the academic progress tracking system which you can use to process test results, view summaries of study progress, and supervise students.

Academic year timetable

The whole Zuyd organization uses the same annual timetable as the starting point for planning and timetabling teaching. You will be given more information about planning and, if appropriate, your timetable by your programme department. As a lecturer, you can view your timetable on Zuydnet.
